こんにちは, For this blog assignment, I watched a video that discussed the history of the Kanji system in Japan and the intricacies and complexities that are observed in the system. It was very interesting learning about the historical context of why kanji is used in Modern-day Japan. The kanji characters/words made their way to Japan during the early 5th century. The interesting part about how the kanji assimilated into Japanese culture and language is that the Chinese pronounced the kanji differently than was interpreted by the Japanese. This gave way to the on'yomi, which is based on the pronunciation of words. Kun'yomi is based on how the kanji is interpreted, and the meanings behind each kanji that do not directly correlate with the pronunciation. The video also described other aspects of kanji, like ateji, which are kanji that are used just for their sound. こんにちは, The assignment for this week required us to find and watch a Japanese-related video and comment on the video. Lucky for me, I watch anime almost every day. This week, I watched the new episode of One Piece that came out this past Sunday. I love to watch anime in subbed form as I get to learn new words and phrases in Japanese that apply to more everyday scenarios. I also get to hear words and phrases that I have learned in class. It is interesting to analyze how the characters act as well, and the gestures and dispositions that they display. The characters always respect the elders that they deeply respect, which also changes certain words and phrases that are in the show. One of the main reasons why I decided to take the initiative to learn Japanese is the amount of anime that I watch. With practice, repetition, and immersing myself in the language, I will be able to reach a level of fluency that enables me to effectively communicate in Japanese.  はじめまして, My name is Joshua Jones, and I am a sophomore studying Neuroscience & Behavior here at the University of Notre Dame. I am from Chatham, New Jersey, and I am currently living in Keenan Hall. I decided to take Japanese as I am in love with the culture, and I watch a lot of anime. This semester, I want to deepen my knowledge of the language and continue to improve in literature and verbal applications of the language.  Hello again! This is Josh Jones, and I am one of Fuse-sensei's Elementary Japanese Students. For this blog post, I decided to watch episodes of one of my favorite anime's, and compare the differences in the translation between the subtitled version and the dubbed English version. When I first started watching One Piece towards the end of 8th grade, I would watch the show in the dubbed English version. I continued to watch the show in the English dub until I got to an episode where the English dub had not been dubbed yet. When I started watching the show in subbed, I instantly fell in love. The power-ups and special attacks sounded cooler and more authentic, and matched the vibe of the show. However, I noticed that there were slight differences between the dubbed and subbed versions in terms of direct translation.
